¡Feliz 2022!

¡Feliz 2022!

Así, presentamos la comunicación científica “Social networks and learning: new challenges, new opportunities. Facebook and Twitter in the classroom” en Madrid (UNED), en el 6º Congreso Internacional de Aprendizaje y Cibersociedad (CG Publisher, Common Ground), el 14 y 15 de noviembre de 2013. Asimismo, expusimos la comunicación científica “Facebook and Twitter in education: a new factor to improve classes” en el Congreso INTED2014 (8th International Technology, Education and Development Conference), del 10 al 12 de marzo de 2014 en Valencia.

The Spanish evolution of broadband

We will try to answer the many questions that arise when talking about broadband in Spain, in collaboration with John McAulay Solé. The internet appeared in the country for the first time in the early 1990s: the first Spanish commercial internet provider, Goya Servicios Telemáticos, was born in 1992, and only a year later the first Spanish web server started working in the Iberian country.

Since then, internet has gone a very long way. In only a quarter of a century, it has gone from being an unknown futuristic concept to an element of every-day use. According to the Asociación de Usuarios de Internet, in 1996 there were only 320,000 internet users in Spain. Since then, that number has risen by more than 12,000% – up to 39.42 million users in 2018. Another interesting stat is the number of people who connect to the internet through their mobile phone. Last year, more than 35 million Spaniards used the internet through these devices, even though this is something which has only been possible since little over a decade ago.

Broadband and its local spreading

Which is the situation of Broadband at local sphere? Broadband Society embraces the municipal activity. It is known that broadband was born in extension of the path information does to all types of communication systems, like enterprises, media or your house.

Broadband services were promoted by the potency of technology terminals, the support of new communication infrastructures – like fiber optic – and the initiative of administrations and industry (Redes de Banda Ancha). We analyse, in collaboration with Irina Carnicero Moreno, the Catalan case, focusing in Malgrat de Mar (a small village).

Broadband in Maresme and Mataró

Broadband is necessary. In Catalonia, the most remarkable changes that have been done in the broadband sector is related to the rural zones, a problematic that has been faced mostly via WiMAX technology, creating a network called Banda Ancha Rural (BAR). We will analyze this case and the Maresme and the Mataró case, with Neus Masnou, from UPF.

When it comes to the situation in Spain, the downloading speed is of 15,25Mbps, a little bit under the media on the European Union, that reaches a speed of 18,44Mbps.

Broadband in Germany: promoting fiber optics

German technology is symbol of reliability, quality, innovation and high technology. We analyze the Broadband Society in Germany in collaboration with Natalie Barresi, from UPF. As it refers to high-speed internet broadband, Germany is certainly at the head of the group, right? Wrong, actually Germany scrambles to merely cover large cities with broadband and has consistently missed the dates agreed by both government and telecom companies to build a digital infrastructure that matches their European neighbors’.

According to the Organization of Economic Cooperation and Development, a research center composed of the world’s most developed economies, Germany’s adoption of fiber-optic cable stands at just 1.8 percent of Internet users, putting it fifth from the bottom in the list of the OECD’s 35 members. In contrast both Japan and South Korea have more than 70 percent of subscribers on super-fast fiber-optic cable.

Broadband snapshot of Italy: impacts in rural and sustainable tourism

We will analyze the Italian broadband in collaboration with Filippo Picerno. Italy, in which rural and sustainable tourism is essential, is linked to Internet and the fist steps of the Broadband Society since 30 April 1986 when the first “ping” message was sended with a computer in Pennsylvania to the Cnuce (“Centro nazionale per il Calcolo Elettronico”) researchers in Pisa, Italy is the fourth country in the world linked to Internet.

Afterwards the World Wide Web (WWW) birth by Tim Berners-Lee in 1991, in Italy was founded an organization called GARR (“Gruppo per l’Armonizzazione delle Reti deal Ricerca”), its work is to link the major universities and research centers of the country.

Broadband in Catalunya: the gap in rural areas

Broadband is increasing in all European countries; this is also the case of Catalunya. Broadband Society axioms are the universalizations of the service and a guaranteed broadband flow. But, is this broadband network available at the same level in urban and rural areas? We analyze it with Ariadna Coll, from Universitat Pompeu Fabra (UPF).
One of the latest broadband news that Catalunya received was on September 19 of 2018, published by El Periódico. “Catalunya tightens the accelerator in the ultrafast internet access”. With this title El Periódico explains that Catalunya has stood out in the last years in comparison to other autonomous communities.

Scotland: a world class digital nation?

We analyze the Scottish broadband case, in collaboration with Nicole Conner. The United Kingdom has been involved in the internet since its origins till Broadband Society, with the idea of wide area networking linking back to work done in computer science laboratories around the country, which in turn helped influence work carried out in both the US and other European nations.

We can credit the World Wide Web to a British man, Tim Berners-Lee, who came up with the idea of hypertext, to allow researchers to share and update information. This was the first steps in the internet we know now, where we can use browsers and setup web servers. The internet has come a long way since this first creation.

An advanced broadband scenario: the case of France

In this post we analyse the French broadband, with the collaboration of Marianne Fromencourt. Have you ever counted how many times a day you consult Internet? - The answer would be an average of 26,6 times a day for French people, according to an investigation realised by the society Ipsos MORI in june of 2016. It is almost the double number for French people between 18 and 24 years old, who consult their smartphone until 50 times a day. Internet appeared in France only 24 years ago, in 1994, but it represents today a big part of our daily life.

Only twenty years after Internet's birth, in 2014, 80,7% of French households had an Internet access. Internet spirit follows us all day, from the news that we consult in the morning to the funny video that we watch to relax after our working day. Moreover we all have a full planning and some people do teleworking, so we want and we need a fast access to Internet. That's why broadband is made for. In France, broadband can be counted between 512 Kbps and 30 Mbps. The French Senate considers that we can talk about broadband from 2 Mbps.
